The ACPSEM Council - who they are and what they do

The Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM) was formed in 1977 to promote and further the development of the physical sciences and engineering as applied to medicine in Australia and New Zealand. The College is based upon, and has similar entrance criteria in terms of academic qualifications and years of appropriate experience to, the various medical colleges.

The College is run by a Council of 13 members comprising:

(a) An Executive of 7 members — President, Vice President, Honorary Secretary, Honorary
Treasurer, Honorary Registrar, Chairman of the Professional Standards Board, and Immediate Past
President.
(b) The Chairmen of each of the 6 Branches of the College — New South Wales/ACT,
Victoria/Tasmania, Queensland, South Australia/NT, Western Australia, and New Zealand.
Members of Council and some, but not all, of the other Officers of the College are directed in their
primary roles and activities according to the College’s Constitution — Memorandum of Association,
Articles of Association, and By-laws.

Specific tasks

- Attend and contribute to Annual Council Meeting (full-day meeting on Sunday preceding annual EPSM Conference).
- Review ACPSEM Projects (refer Procedures for Development of ACPSEM Projects – July 1996) including:
a. Minor Projects.
b. Discussion Papers on proposed Major Projects.
c. Major projects themselves (Position Papers, Accreditation Programs, Education Program, etc.)
- Review and vote upon other matters of importance to College, its members, or the professions it represents.
- Corporate Responsibility

Members of Council must ensure that they comply with their legal obligations as company
directors of the ACPSEM. Council members are expected to be familiar with the Articles of
Association and By-Laws of the College, these Duties and Guidelines for Officers, the ACPSEM
Conflict of Interest policy, and the ASIC requirements for company directors.

Members of Council must advise the Hon Secretary , in writing, of their awareness of College
